Letter from the President

President Black

President BlackIn 1990 - not long ago - futurist John Nesbitt thrilled the world with his book Megatrends' predictions about 21st century life. Interestingly, the internet was not even mentioned. The world is changing at a dramatic rate! Followers of Jesus know the wonder of change - what it means in redeemed lives lived well and redeemed societies transformed. The Templeton Honors College was established to prepare followers of Jesus who are called to influence the course of events in society as leaders of thought and transformation.

Teaching and learning in the Templeton Honors College are teleological; that is, purposive in deepening students' understanding of the world and their sacred vocation in it. The epistemology or foundational theory of knowledge in the Honors College is the same for all of Eastern University: knowledge grows out of the confluence of faith, reason and justice. Axiological and ontological dimensions are critical to student formation in the THC, as well. The first seeks answers to the great question, "What is good?", and the second searches similarly for "What is real?".

When students have completed studies in the THC, they will have scaled a ladder of wisdom described in the first two chapters of Proverbs as having seven rungs. The first is reverential awe for a God who is holy, followed by knowledge of information and ideas, insight into problem solving, and prudence in judgment. The three qualities defined in Proverbs as "the end of wisdom" are righteousness, justice, and equity in all paths.

Is the THC stimulating academically?

"Between intense classes and endless discussions with my friends, the THC is where I learned how to think critically." - Rebecca Jennings '07

Almost 150 years ago, Tennyson's "prophecy" offered these lines: "For I dipt into the future, far as the human eye could see, saw the vision of the world and all the wonder that would be". The Templeton Honors College at Eastern University is committed to that kind of "prophetic" venture through its work with gifted students who will affect wonder in our society's future.

Best wishes,

Dr. David Black
President of Eastern University
