Excerpt from The State Article:

Andrew Bilindabagabo was just a toddler when he and his family
survived the Rwandan genocide, holing up inside an Anglican church
compound before making a harrowing escape to the Congo.

Sixteen
years later, the Ben Lippen School senior, who will graduate Friday, is
returning to his homeland with four classmates to film a documentary
about survival, forgiveness and the promises of faith.

At its annual awards luncheon, the Middle Atlantic Conference honored Aaron Benz with a Giant Steps Award.
The freshman goalie from
Louisville, Kentucky was recognized for
excelling while overcoming enormous obstacles. Benz had an exceptional
first year in goal for Eastern’s successful Men’s Lacrosse program, but
his story goes back to the spring of
2009.

Class of 2011

On top of receiving a top-notch education and becoming
integrated into a Christian community, one of the very best experiences for the
Templeton Honors College student is a semester spent abroad. This opportunity
not only allows students to separate themselves from their usual surroundings
and schedules, but it also provides an opportunity to become immersed in a
whole other culture. For one THC student, this experience was quite an
eye-opener. “Studying in the Middle East, I spent the entire semester as a
white Christian among Arab Muslims,” wrote Evan Hewitt, who took part in the
Middle East Studies Program for the 2010 spring semester. Based out of Cairo,
Egypt, this program spanned two and a half months and included classes for
subjects ranging from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Tabla drumming. Also,
this program provided an opportunity for students to spend one month traveling
through Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Following his experience abroad however, Evan Hewitt did not

Class of 2013

Currently a freshman in the Templeton Honors College, class of 2013
student, Chelsea Merkel is wasting no time on setting out to broaden her
horizons. As an enrollee in the biochemistry program at Eastern University,
Miss Merkel is looking forward to a career in the sciences. One step that Merkel
is taking to achieve that goal is interning at the Veterans Hospital of
Lebanon, Pennsylvania this summer. Miss Merkel acquired this position during
the 2009-2010 school year and will be able to commence working at the close of
the spring 2010 semester.

When asked about the contribution of her Eastern University and
Templeton Honors College experiences toward her internship this summer, Merkel stated
that, “The
techniques I learned in the labs at Eastern and the concepts that were taught
in the classes definitely gave me a better understanding of the things which
with I will be working.” In addition, Miss Merkel believes that her Western
Civilization courses will...

Class of 2012

For most students, a semester spent abroad yields the opportunity to experience
unfamiliar cultures, interact with challenging curriculums and to form new relationships.
For Danielle Bailey and Marissa Bartow however, a semester abroad holds an exciting
and challenging experience that stands outside of the norm. This trip for the
two Honors College students will mark the culmination of a year-long project of
historic proportions.

Over the course of the 2009-2010 school year, Bailey, Bartow, fellow
student Ruth Chia and Dr. Jonathan Yonan have been busy transcribing, editing
and indexing the diary of Moravian church leader Christian Ignatius LaTrobe.
LaTrobe’s diary, which spans the latter half of the 18th century,
reveals many fascinating insights into the life of an upper middle class man of
the late 1700s. In addition to this insight though, the diary also discloses
unique information regarding LaTrobe’s involvement in the abolition of the
slave trade, the life of Charles Wesley, the Warren Hastings trial and...

Scholar-in-Residence

As Scholar-in-Residence for the Templeton Honors
College and Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University, Dr. Phillip Cary is
worth more than his weight in gold to the faculty and students that he works
with. Serving in his capacity as a teacher, Dr. Cary also spends time as both a
mentor and a friend to those around him and has been a professor of the Honors
College Western Civilization course since its inception in 1999. Besides his
more humble workings though, Dr. Cary is also world-renowned for his expertise
in the life of Augustine and other areas of philosophy.

A new addition to Dr. Cary’s already impressive résumé is the publishing of his
fifth book, entitled Good News for
Anxious Christians: Ten Practical Things You DON'T Have to Do. The themes that
Dr. Cary deals with in this work are inspired by real-life conversations that
the professor has had with his students, colleagues, pastors and friends.

Assistant Professor

In 2009, the
Templeton Honors College had the distinct pleasure of seeing another faculty
member in print with the presentation of Dr. Jonathan Yonan’s article Evangelicalism
and Enlightenment: Two Generations in the Okely Family . An assistant professor at the Honors
College, Dr. Yonan contributed his article to the collaborative work entitled Self, Community, World: Moravian
Education in a Transatlantic World. Published in December of 2009, the first edition of this
text was published by Lehigh University Press
and edited by Heikki E. Lempa and Paul Peucker. To find
more information online about this book, please see the link below.

Dr. Yonan was also an exemplary
candidate to be included in this project because of his expertise in the area
of the Moravian church. Included in his compositions that served to prepare Dr.
Yonan for this work was his thesis completed at the University of Oxford
entitled, Evangelicalism
and Enlightenment: The Moravian Experience in England, c.
1750-1800 . However, this essay was...

Class of 2003

Following the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, Jonathan
Wilson-Hartgrove and his wife Leah participated in an Iraqi relief initiative
by Christian Peacemaker Teams known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the conclusion of this journey, the
Wilson-Hartgroves and their team of aid workers experienced an unexpected
catastrophe on their trip. While driving in the western desert of Iraq, a car
in their convoy wrecked after coming into contact with a piece of shrapnel close
to a nearby town. To the team members’
collective surprise upon returning to the scene of the accident however, the
volunteers involved in the crash had already been rescued by people in the town
and were treated free of charge by a local doctor. The name of that town was
Rutba, and the exemplary hospitality that the Wilson-Hartgroves encountered
there is exactly what inspired them to open the Rutba House.

Class of 2009

To many, achievement is weighed by wealth, luxury, certifications or another
sort of worldly measure. However, Christopher Plumberg, a graduate of Eastern
University and the Templeton Honors College, has decided to measure his achievement
by something else. According to Plumberg, “I believe that my life must consist
in being filled with the Holy Spirit and being surrendered to His will.” Although
extremely commendable in itself, this attitude and aim of obedience to Christ
is comparatively accented by Plumberg’s achievements in the field of
astrophysics.

While still in undergraduate studies, Plumberg began work with Eastern
University’s Dr. David Bradstreet on measuring the physical parameters of a
solar system by monitoring changes in light intensity over time. After graduating
and completing other published work on the cataclysmic variable system V795
Her, Plumberg also worked with Doctors Charles Kankelborg and Craig DeForest of
Montana State University. In the articles and other publications that followed
from this research, many ground...
