Dr. McGuire is chair of the Department of Political Science and regularly offers courses in the history of political thought. In the THC, he teaches The Active Life: Rhetoric and Public Discourse, a course on rhetoric, politics and the good life which is taken by all honors students in the second year of their studies.
Dr. McGuire’s research focuses on late-modern German philosophy and political thought, especially Immanuel Kant and F.W.J. Schelling. He is particularly interested in how Kant and Schelling attempt to articulate a robust conception of the human good through modern ideas about freedom, autonomy, and personhood.
He also has an long-standing interest in the thought of twentieth century political theorist, Eric Voegelin, and he has co-edited (with Lee Trepanier) Eric Voegelin and the Continental Tradition: Explorations in Political Thought (University of Missouri Press, 2010).
Dr. McGuire lives with his wife, Elizabeth-Jane, and his daughter, Lucy. He spends his spare time worrying about whether the Edmonton Oilers will ever win another Stanley Cup.
